uni 2 beyond builds the capacity of young adults with an intellectual disability whilst transforming the workplace by building engagement and inclusion. Mirrored on successful initiatives in the UK and the United States, the 3 year program combines university study (Inclusive Education Program), vocational training, job skills training and a job internship to help these young adults find a career path that reflects their individual skills, strengths and interests. Employers and coworkers are encouraged to focus on ability rather than disability, in turn creating more opportunities for mainstream employment.
The Inclusive Education Program component has been running successfully for 2 years at The University of Sydney with government support. It is expected that the trading mechanism for this social enterprise will be diverse and include corporate investment; individual fees; philanthropic donations and inkind support from the Centre for Disability Studies.
