The Community Grocer is a social enterprise that aims to increase access for people living in public housing to fresh and affordable food. We do this by running weekly fruit and vegetable markets that sell culturally relevant food at affordable prices.
Operating since late 2014, we have held more than 50 markets and served more than 8000 customers over 4.5 tonnes of tomatoes.
Our customers include people living on a low-income, refugees and asylum seekers, students and people living with a disability. Each week we serve approximately 150 customers at our markets in Carlton and Fawkner, significantly improving food security for these vulnerable populations. As part of the market we also offer a free BBQ lunch and a food relief distribution point for customers who need to supplement their weekly shop.
The Community Grocer is also about creating community. Our markets generate a vibrant atmosphere and an opportunity for people from culturally diverse backgrounds to engage with one another around a common, essential need – food!
