The social enterprise sector has gained tremendous momentum over the past few years, however what many people do not realise is that social enterprise is not a new or passing phenomenon. Trent Bartlett, the contributor to this month’s Opinion Piece, reminds us of the positive impacts that social enterprises, in particular community owned co-operatives, have been making in Australia for over 150years. Also, the recently released FASES research reveals is that social enterprises are operating in all trading sectors of Australia’s economy – including mining!
If you run or are employed by a social enterprise and would like to make known the work you do forward the details to Vineet Singh: vineet.singh@socialtraders.com.au

About Social Enterprise
Most social enterprises do not neatly fit into a set structure, they are Hybrids, often mixing and matching characteristics from many typologies in order to meet the needs they have been developed to address. The FASES research reveals just how diverse the sector is and the recent Crunch applications we’ve received demonstrate the plethora of ideas for how social enterprises could work. The social enterprise typology on our website will give you an in-depth look at various approaches, ideals and social purposes of social enterprise: http://www.socialtraders.com.au/social-enterprise-typology
Social Enterprise Profile
An example of a Hybrid model is the social enterprise KereKere. KereKere is a coffee vendor selling fair trade organic coffee on the Melbourne University Campus. Customers who buy the coffee decide how the profits will be distributed onto several social programs – and they also employ young people facing barriers to work. KereKere has been operating successfully for several years and is now looking to expand. Stay tuned for more news on KereKere and have a look at their website for more information: http://www.kerekere.org/
