Social enterprise seems to be the buzz word of the moment but there are many examples of organisations which have been working at the intersection of commercial revenue and social impact for a long time without calling themselves social enterprises. So why bother using this buzz word at all? Why not just get on with doing good stuff in a business-like manner?

School for social entrepreneurs opens in South Auckland with 12 students - Mar 23rd, 2012

The New Zealand School for Social Entrepreneurs was officially launched in South Auckland on 21 March 2012. Twelve entrepreneurs involved in an array of social ventures aimed to radically improve lives in their communities have been selected for the first intake of the new action leaning school.

Social entrepreneurs are change agents for communities. They see unmet social needs and develop programmes to meet those needs.

The Lee Myung-bak administration has been pushing for what it calls a "just society" and a new model of capitalism that enables the rich and the poor grow together.

Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus has said ‘Social Business’ can be a great tool for rebuilding the quake-hit Haiti.

“Social business will have a tremendous impact on the reconstruction of Haiti's economy and social fabric,” Dr Yunus said emphasising the critical role of the youth of Haiti and their role in rebuilding the country.

The Nobel laureate was in New York, where he attended the MDG Advocacy Group meeting on September 20.
