From where I was to where I am now
The book tells the personal stories of how seven lives have transformed and the vital role social enterprise play in this transformation.
From where I was to where I am now is a book that brings together seven people who work in social enterprises. These seven have overcome enormous barriers and challenging backgrounds to become part of the burgeoning social enterprise movement.
The storytelling is from the perspective of the seven individuals — they tell their story as they see it — their lives, their experiences, and the opportunities they have taken to walk forward with hope, self-esteem and pride.
Ben Ross from Kingston (Queensland) begins his story as a teenager living in a small regional town. In his words ...”Most of the people there either waste their lives on drugs, or go to jail or something like that. I hardly knew anyone who worked”.
Finding a path to change this thinking has had a huge impact on Ben. BoysTown — an employment and training enterprise — engaged with Ben through the Centrelink job service provider program. “When I started it was a bit of a shock. I was pretty nervous, but all the other boys on the crew were around the same age as me. We got on like a house on fire, right from the start”.
And Troy Stone from Ulverstone (Tasmania) tells his story as a young man living with ADHD, learning to focus on a task and being given the opportunity to become part of a team. “For me, the support I get [through Equity Labour Services] helps me get into the groove of things. It’s more like everyone accepts that people are different, and you just feel like part of the family”.
Providing positive and supportive work environments has enables Ben and Troy to learn transferable skills, gain valuable experience and move towards mainstream employment. And both young men have a strong sense of confidence about their futures.
